THE BRIEF:
The Bute Theatre: Audience capacity 100. 12 weeks project: 6 week design and planning with on-site director. 6 weeks of production and realization: scenic construction, intsallation into the theatre, and a week run of dressing the shows. The show remained a sell-out for the week run.
Skills demanded:
Team leadership and organization.
Heading up a Design team of three design assistants over the 6 weeks and working closely with stage managers: lighting, sound and A.V designers.
Managing and working within a budget:
Designated budget of 2000 split between Costume and Set. The design demanded scenic construction of 4 steel deck platforms, a vast 17m X 6m butchers curtain and costume sourcing for a cast of 9.
In order to stay within set budget we had to hand- make a replication of a butchers curtain in a fire retardant polythene sheeting, cutting by hand all the individual strips to be hung en-mass. The plastic had to be sprayed with industrial car paint in order to provide the right opacity to receive A.v projection on a extensive surface scale.
